The Veuve Clicquot Summer Terrace at Whitcomb’s – an exceptional alfresco experience

4.5 out of 5.0 stars

Summer in London brings a Mediterranean charm to the capital, as alfresco venues flourish across the city. Among the standout spots this season is the Whitcomb’s by Veuve Clicquot Summer Terrace, at The Londoner hotel in the heart of Leicester Square.

Perfectly positioned in the West End, this stylish terrace offers a welcome escape—ideal for a mid-shopping break or a pre-theatre refreshment. With its chic setting and prime location, it’s fast becoming one of the city’s most sought-after outdoor dining destinations.

Adorned with vibrant planters overflowing with yellow and orange blooms, the Whitcomb’s by Veuve Clicquot Summer Terrace offers an elegant setting to unwind with a chilled glass of champagne while taking in the buzz of Leicester Square.

The terrace’s signature yellow Veuve Clicquot-branded tables and chairs add a playful yet refined touch, complemented by striking champagne flutes with orange stems—another nod to the iconic brand’s distinctive style. A product of one of the world’s most prestigious champagne houses, Veuve Clicquot remains a timeless favourite for many; these stylish glasses are now top of my wish list so that I can recreate the experience at home.

The champagne list includes Veuve Clicquot available by the glass, bottle or even a magnum if you are celebrating with a larger group of people. Tasting flights allow you to sample three champagnes from the list, and expertly crafted cocktails based on Veuve Clicquot are also an option. The signature Veuve Clicquot Yellow label is a good place to start, or opt for the delicate and fruity Veuve Clicquot Rosé, perfect for a celebratory drink. You can also try the Veuve Clicquot Vintage 2015 champagne or the top-of-the-range La Grande Dame 2018, named after Madame Clicquot.

I visited Whitcomb’s Summer Terrace for lunch on an overcast day; the bright flowers immediately lifted my spirits.

To start, I chose a glass of Veuve Clicquot Rosé to accompany my starter of salmon carpaccio. This dish was light and summery with tiny cubes of tart apple and soft, salty feta yoghurt.

For my main course, I plumped for the pan-fried sea bass with a generous portion of crispy-skinned sea bass fillets resting on a white wine cream with lemon and chervil. The fish was perfectly cooked and married well with the rich creamy sauce. I chose not to have a side to accompany this dish; it was sufficient as a standalone dish.

A glass of the signature Yellow Label Veuve Clicquot champagne was the perfect accompaniment for the sea bass. A true classic champagne, it’s a favourite of mine for celebratory occasions with friends. This elegant, perfectly balanced champagne is excellent for sipping or to accompany alfresco food.

Not wanting anything too heavy for lunch, I was on the lookout for a light dessert—and the champagne sorbet turned out to be just the thing. Made with Veuve Clicquot Brut and fresh strawberries, it arrived in a small, elegant bowl. Refreshing and delicately sweet, it was the perfect way to end the meal without feeling overindulged. A luxurious yet simple treat that felt just right for a summer afternoon on the terrace.

There are two menus available to choose from: the Veuve Clicquot Summer Terrace menu and the Whitcomb’s À La Carte menu. With an emphasis on Mediterranean dishes, there are ample choices, whether your appetite is big or small, if you wish to have a meal. The menus offer a delightful selection of small plates, main dishes, salads and meat cooked on the grill. If you are looking to visit on a Sunday, there is a selection of classic roast dishes. Vegetarians and pescatarians are also well catered for.
